Deputy Education Minister Kalaya Sophonpanic visited a testing field for O-NET of Mathayom 3 (grade 9) students in the 2021 academic year at Patumwan Demonstration School.

The National Institute of Educational Testing Service (Public Organization) conducted O-NET of Mathayom 3 (grade 9) students in the 2021 academic year on Sunday 13th February, 2022 at all testing fields.

The Deputy Education Minister (Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanic), the Director of National Institute of Educational Testing Service (Public Organization) (Asst.Prof. Sirida Burachat, Ph.D.), the Deputy Director of the Secondary Education Service Area Office Bangkok 1 (Mr. Sarayut Thisrichai) and team visited a testing field for O-NET of Mathayom 3 (grade 9) students at Patumwan Demonstration School with the school director (Mr. Chotivit Tumsujit) and teachers’ welcoming.

After visiting the testing field, the Deputy Education Minister (Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanic) said that there are 450,081 test-takers for grade 9 O-NET. The number of test-taker is higher than the last year (around 60,000 students) which means the students realize an importance of taking  O-NET and they want to know their academic capability in school subjects. On the other hand, schools are able to use these test results to develop teaching and it is glad that NIETS improved the testing by bringing the digital testing for the test. NIETS guided this system as a pilot at Praratchathannayao Secondry School in Chachoengsao.

Moreover, NIETS also improved a testing of Thai language by using an essay type test in the test of Thai language in grade 9 for the first time. This will increase the score of students who are randomly selected for PISA. The Ministry of Education attaches a great importance to promote Thai students’ critical reading because reading is the beginning of learning everything which is significant for Thai students. In addition, The Deputy Education Minister admired NIETS, the testing centers and educational institutes that conducted the Ordinary National Education Test according to the Ordinary National Education Test Standard.

Asst.Prof. Sirida Burachat, Ph.D., the Director of National Institute of Educational Testing Service (Public Organization) said that there are 450,081 test-takers in O-NET of Mathayom 3 (grade 9) students in the 2021 academic year (4,124 testing-fields and 20,117 exam rooms).The digital testing system is used in O-NET for 59 Mathayom 3 (grade 9) students at Praratchathannayao Secondry School and an essay type test is used for the test of Thai language in O-NET of Mathayom 3 for the first time in order to provide students’ opportunity to practice summarizing, giving an opinion on story they read, logical thinking, associating and the appropriate uses of Thai language. The test consists of 2 parts: summarizing and giving an opinion on a passage (30 marks). This is to assess writing stand according to Standard TH2.1: an effective application of writing process for communications, compositions, synopses, stories in various forms, data and information reports, study reports and research reports, Grade 9/4 indicator to write synopses Grade 9/6 indicator to write to explain, clarify, express opinions and disagreements and Grade 9/7 indicator to write to analyse, criticise and express knowledge, opinions or disagreements on various matters. NIETS conducted the test by strictly following the measure against the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) released by the Ministry of Public Health and related agency.

NIETS will announce the result of O-NET for Mathayom 3 students on 25th March, 2023. The results are reported into 6 levels which are (1) individual score of each test-taker, (2) 6 reports in school level, (3) Educational Service Area level, (4) Provincial Education level, (5) Regional Education level and (6) Country level. Students are able to use the test result for personal improvement plan and improving themselves while teachers, school directors and policy administrators use the result for teaching and educational development.
